Site Hacked!

I just realized yesterday that my blog was hacked by some group. I don’t remember the name though. I don’t know when it was hacked but I was informed by Google via email yesterday night. Thanks Google!

I tried to log-in to the client area to open a support ticket but there was no account associated with my email. I frantically emailed my host via the official support email and found out someone (with my login credentials) changed the email associated with my account to my old Hotmail. I immediately thought of the security breach that happened earlier this month after I used TrueSwitch Hotmail.

In the state of panic, I login to ftp to check my files. Sure enough, all files were gone (apart from the index.php that the hackers placed) but luckily only ibnuasad.org was affected. The rest of my sites and database was untouched.

3 Important Things in Designing a Website

Designing websites can be a tricky task…even for the professionals. When it comes to designing the perfect website you will have to pay extra attention to every details, including minor details to ensure that your new website will be performing in an optimum state.

Here is a checklist of what is recommended when designing your new website:

Do not use flash / splash pages.

Pages created with flash is a major NO-NO in terms of search engine optimization. One of the most common mistakes that ever amateur web designer does is that they will create a very nice splash page with words such as “Please Enter”, “Click Here To Continue”, “Welcome to Our Website”, etc. Even though those pages looks nice but they don’t really serve a meaningful purpose.

Do promote affiliate programs or place banner advertisements excessively.

Here is another common mistake that everyone does. A real valued website will not have any kind of advertisements except for advertisements of their own. Advertising affiliate programs or other similar products excessively might just give a reason for your visitors to click the “back” button. Always focus on giving valuable content and information to your users to make them feel comfortable. When your visitors trust you, then you can start promoting your affiliate links but don’t make it like a sales pitch as that will make your visitors feel that they are being forced to do something.

Clear, Simple and Clean Navigation

Provide an easy to use navigation menu or system so that everyone, including your young kids can navigate through the site easily. One of the most recommended type of navigation is using a drop-down menu. This part of web designing is essential because if your visitors are having a hard time navigating through your site, they will definitely leave your site.

Should hackers be sentenced to death?

Chinese Hacker Sentenced to Death for Embezzlement

A 36-year old hacker was sentenced to death in Hangzhou recently by the Ningbo Intermediate Court in east China’s Zhejiang Province for embezzling over one million yuan (US$120,000) of public money from a bank account.

A senior official said that this is the most severe punishment that a Chinese judicial organization has given to a hacker.

As an accountant in Ningbo branch of the Bank of Communications of China, Fang Yong embezzled about 1.66 million yuan (about US$200, 000) of public money, by counterfeiting bank paper, and taking money from people’s account from May to August 1990.

He fled to Canada in 1990 and was expelled by the Canadian government last year and sent back to China for trial.
