Should hackers be sentenced to death?

March 7, 2008

Chinese Hacker Sentenced to Death for Embezzlement

A 36-year old hacker was sentenced to death in Hangzhou recently by the Ningbo Intermediate Court in east China’s Zhejiang Province for embezzling over one million yuan (US$120,000) of public money from a bank account.

A senior official said that this is the most severe punishment that a Chinese judicial organization has given to a hacker.

As an accountant in Ningbo branch of the Bank of Communications of China, Fang Yong embezzled about 1.66 million yuan (about US$200, 000) of public money, by counterfeiting bank paper, and taking money from people’s account from May to August 1990.

He fled to Canada in 1990 and was expelled by the Canadian government last year and sent back to China for trial.

Plasma or LCD TV?

March 5, 2008

I’m thinking to buy a new TV for my room in the new house and I’m doing a little research about Plasma & LCD TV. Here’s three detailed response that I got from one of my fave W forums:

Neither.

But if you have to have one or the other then Plasma.

I would not purchase an LCD as they are rubbish. Crap blacks and blurred pictures.

There are some nice 1920×1080 Plasmas now, they have a true 1920×1080 resolution and do not resize the picture to fit a low res screen like older models.

No LCD could stand up to a good comparison due to their limitations. They have very poor display quality.

For those with LCD’s. Get yourself a good video of a man skiing down a snow covered mountain wearing a black coat. Play it on your TV after bringing some Plasma owning friends around so they can piss themselves laughing at your mistake.

Whilst that is true, bring in an LCD with 120hertz, wide color gamut (or whatever marketing term is called for you tv’s color), and a nice contrast ratio, say.. LNT5271, Samsung 51 inch, 71 Series, 25000:1 Dyno Contrast Ratio, 120 hertz. Must say, it is an amazing picture, or even a Samsung LNT5281 With LED Backlit LED 500,000:1 Dyno Contrast Ratio with pixel shift.

Whilst I am all for plasma over LCD, price comparison, LCD wins, I can get the best LCD on the market (consumer, 52inches, 120 hertz etc, i.e a bravia or samsungs flagship tv’s) and still it would be cheaper than a Plasma with 1080p.

Also to the pictures of the blur, again 120 hertz.. and to those with the image burn in’s on plasma, yes it is possible, look at any LG tv, they’re terrible for burn ins, you cant leave one going for 5 mins on the same screen without it burning.
I’ve sold alot of tv’s in my time, and still do.

and also, about the glare of the plasma screens, look at samsungs newer plasma series HPT/FPT (720p/1080p respectively), they’re coated with light absorbent screens so the glare is near nothing.

pixel burns must be a pain in the ass, everyone knows this problem has almost completely been fixed but still… same as the response time for LCD’s.

Both technologies have evolved (agreed, LCD in a faster way seen as 5 years ago it totally sucked balls for Tvs Mr. Green )
It depends on a million factors, I think the most important are pricerange, screensize, and the space between you and the tv (this actually should determine the size of your tv). I personally am about to buy a ~42″ inch 1080p plasma, cause I’m not THAT far from my Tv, and for the information I dug up this choice seemed the best.

We can conclude it’s an individual choice, with craploads of factors to consider. I’m pretty sure there’s little variation in imagequality in a 50″ plasma and 50″ LCD from the same make in the same pricerange.

Photoshop CS3: Is it worth it?

February 23, 2008

Photoshop CS3I won’t go into many details about the new Photoshop CS3 from Adobe because most of us don’t like reading explanations of software experiences, so I’ll just keep it a bit short, with some pros and cons from my experience.

Pros
- Faster, more stable software for the Intel Mac.
- Menu system is more customizable, and works nicely.
- The software, overall, feels like CS2 so there is no huge jump in the learning curve.
- A bunch of new features I haven’t bothered to use, but I’m sure they’re great!
- Acrobat 8 is actually a lot better than 7. A lot better.

Cons
- Icons not really as pretty anymore
- Big price tag. But for some of us..it’s not a problem ;)
